If you search Pinterest for "College Girl Wardrobe" you're going to find a plethora of blog posts explaining to you how to "not look like a freshman" or "transition your wardrobe to college". Basically, these bloggers are telling you that you need to scrap all the things that you loved dearly in high school to suddenly become more posh, polished, and snobby for college. The fact of the matter is that you are going to be stressed and overwhelmed during your first semester of college and you definitely don't need to add the worry of trying to master a brand new wardrobe to everything else your struggling with. Here's my advice: hold on to your wardrobe. Keep what makes you happy, that's what fashion is all about. If a pink cat sweater makes you happy: ROCK THAT CAT SWEATER. Just make sure that you are comfortable and happy in your clothes. Wear what makes you happy.
Today, I'm just going to suggest some really comfortable, versatile pieces that you can easily incorporate into your wardrobe.
1- Black Leggings
Whether you're in to wearing leggings as pants or not, you definitely need a pair of good, solid black leggings. They are really a value buy in that you will incorporate them into so many outfits. You can wear them under a dress, a flowy top, or, my personal favorite, an oversized long sleeve shirt. If you want to be really fancy, buy an unlined pair for warm days and a fleece-lined pair for walking to class on those cold mornings.
Quick Tip: Pick up a long sleeve shirt from the university bookstore, pair with your black leggings and Sperry's. On cold days, add a chunky knit scarf and a messy bun to achieve the perfect "basic white girl" look. Honestly though, this is a really comfortable outfit to wear for long study sessions in the library.
2- Rain Jacket
There's a saying in Morehead, "If it's not raining, it's snowing". Since we don't get a whole lot of snow, you can assume that it rains a lot which makes rain gear an absolute must. I got my lovely jacket at the Cotton Market. If you're in the Richmond area, you definitely need to check them out before you head to school.
Now, no matter where you end of going to college, you are going to spend your fair share of time of walking in the rain. Sure an umbrella does the trick, but sometimes you need the umbrella to protect your precious backpack and the rain jacket to protect your clothes.
Quick Tip: Pick a rain coat in a bright color so that you stand out on dreary days. This will help you feel bright and pretty so you can beat the rainy woes. Pick up a pair of cute rain boots at Tractor Supply (they're just as cute as Hunter boots for half the price), braid your hair back into pigtails, where a light colored t-shirt under your jacket, add a bright lipstick, and you're ready to kick a rainy day's butt.
3- Pretty Flats
I am sure that you all have a decent collection of boots, tennis shoes, and heels, but trust me when I tell you that you definitely need a couple pairs of pretty flats. They go with so many different things that you will get plenty of wear out of them. They are also fairly cheap! My favorite pair is a bright orange pair that I picked up at Old Navy a couple years ago for about $7.00
4- Professional Attire
You need to have a few pieces in your wardrobe that are professional. This can be a business dress, a sensible pantsuit (a la Hillary), dress pants, a blazer, whatever you feel the most comfortable in. You never know when you might be headed to the state capital, meeting the president of your university, interviewing for a position, or attending an SGA function. You need to always have the option to be professional, but remember that just because you're in professional attire doesn't mean to have to be frumpy or masculine. Professional attire can be young, fresh, and feminine.
Quick Tip: Make sure that whatever you choose fits correctly. It's really tempting with professional attire to pick things that don't fit. Don't fall into this trap. Be confident in who you are and remember that clothes are meant to touch your body.
5- Statement Jewelry
Start building your jewelry collection now, and don't just leech off your mother's (trust me on this one, you'll thank me later). Buy pieces that are pretty and versatile. NEVER buy a necklace that only matches with one outfit. If you can't wear it with at least two outfits, don't buy it.
Quick Tip: Pick out a pretty collar button up. Button it all the way up and wear a pretty necklace with it. Add skinny jeans and some cute shoes then you're ready to take on the day!
This is by no means a definitive list, but it at least gives you an idea of some of the things that you have in your wardrobe. Hopefully this helps you mark clothes of the list of things to worry about. Let me know if you liked this list and I will definitely do more.
